The city’s current plans for the millstones

with 2 comments

Current plans call for the millstones to be drilled and inserted with 3 steel pins to fasten them each to their pedestals. (Click image to enlarge)

See the city’s plans above.  Although the City and other’s claim that the stones may be too fragile to move, apparently drilling into them for the insertion of steel pins is perfectly safe.

ariel view of new installation will take you to a PDF file showing an overhead shot of the proposed Queens Plaza greenspace.  If you magnify to 75% or 100% you will find the millstone seats in the upper right depicted as two spoked wheels near a bend in the road.  One is within a few feet of a bicycle path, the other is under a nearby tree.

  1. Millstone seat? They are making chairs out of them?

    • No. The “millstone seat” is what the plans call the pedestal that the stones will “sit” on. But you do raise a good point! People will most probably be climbing all over them, leaning their bikes against them and sitting on them if they are installed in this way. Not a very fitting way to treat such important pieces of history is it?
